I got great news last night. A nurse from Children's called me to let me know my little girl I have been taking care of since I started working... got a heart transplant last night... finally!!!! She had waited since Dec 23.

that April is almost over! Hi ladies. Hope you're all well. I miss you! Chicago is awesome. I really love it here. Job is ok...jobs are always just ok after the initial excitement. Working the nightshift now and will be indefinately, so I feel like a vampire most of the time. So.... the other night Dan Fuller had to transfer a patient from his floor down to mine and of course I was assigned to be the nurse. I know he gave me report, but I didn't listen to anything he was saying because I just kept staring at his hair and laughing in my head. It took everything in me not to point, laugh histerically, and yell out HAIR PIECE. What a douche.

Hi Mean Girls-
sorry, I have been MIA from the blog and talking to all you hot nurses... I was out of town this weekend and will be gone again this upcoming weekend. I actually only came back into town to work my 3 days and am leaving again. My dad was in a bit of a crazy accident.. in which it is a miracle he is still alive so I was in Texas helping the fam and will be going again this weekend. He is stable and ok but still in a lot of pain. So I'll be gone a lot the next couple weeks.. but will be back in FULL-FORCE soon. I think the Derby is a GREAT idea and would def be game. :) Talk to you girls soon.

Hi girls!

Hi guys hope you are all doing well. Congrats to everyone on passing boards!!!! So for all of you that are concerned about your family and friends having babies at St. John's because smokey works there. Well I talked to Sarah today ( P.S. she says hi to everyone! ) and not only did she not sign the two year contract for the fellowship, she also failed boards and disappeared. I love that Goldfarb academy no longer has a 100% passage rate on boards. Anyway just want to pass on that tid bit and tell everyone hi! Hope things are going well!

Well of course I'm drunk right now... its 3 hrs post NCLEX! My god --I swear that fucking test was worse than calling off my wedding, worse than figuring out I might be a homo, worse than telling my parents I might be a homo, worse than losing someone you love, worse than Goldfard School of Hair Design, andworse than sticking your hand in a poopy toilet cause your cell phone fell in. That was hands down the worst thing I have EVER experienced! Who the fuck gets 77 questions... only ME, thats who! Pray for me thats all I've got to say :)

That is the description of how I am feeling today. Apparently starting off the night with 4 glasses of red wine does not help with hangovers the next day. Bettlach & I had our marriage class this weekend. It was so nice out Friday night and all I wanted to do was hang out on a patio somewhere and we had to go to marriage class. Almost moved the wedding to a park. We had to answer all these questions and one of them was "How long do you want to wait to have children"? Apparently Bettlach & I are not exactly on the same page here. I said 8 years. He said ONE year or a little more. Yes, you read that right, ONE year. Is he insane? That conversation was a fun one. Hey! I miss u too. Hope Alexian is treating you well. Orientation is pretty boring there I remember the worst day was the first day when you r with all new employees and have to do group things... but it gets better and you will be on your floor soon! And those ICU nurses are really nice. Where you living? I went to Chicago last weekend but ended up just studying most of the weekend, stayed in, watched a lot of movies and tried to stay warm. I think I will be coming again for St. Patty's day weekend. I think I might go to South Side parade if I don't have to work on Mon.. so we should def meet up. As long as I pass boards and haven't gone into a deep depression. And once the weather gets nicer... we r planning a Mean Girls road trip to Chicago!! :) Talk to u soon.

Sunday Funday...

So... my day started off watch St. Joan of Arc 3rd grade girls bball. Afterwards Bettlach and I are trying to figure out what to do... we say to each other, well we are both hungry so lets go get some lunch and a cocktail or two but nothing crazy because we are trying to save money and not be alcoholics and all. Cool. So we head up to Sportszone and get there about 2:30 pm. Had some lunch, a couple bloody marys and the next thing I know it is 8:30 pm. So after racing our waitress around the restaurant for an hour to get our bill (She SUCKED by the way) we decide to do what is in our best interest and head home. NOT REALLY. We go to Nicks. So we are at Nicks playing "pass the trash" this card game. The bartender comes up to our table and says, "you guys cannot play drinking games in here" I reply, "we are not playing a drinking game we are gambling" and he just walks away. So I am thinking, ok, no drinking games but gambling is fine. Not so much. Apparently you are not allowed to play any games at Nicks Pub. No cards, no dice, no quarters, NOTHING. We offered to put the money away and not gamble. Not good enough. The manager guy said no can do. No games. He was really nice about it but I was like fine, we will take our business elsewhere where we can continue to play "pass the trash". So we leave Nicks and go, where else, but my favorite establishment on Chippewa, Johnny Gittos. Who, needless to say did not care if we played "pass the trash" or honestly things much worse. At Gittos there was this group of nurses (I know because karoke Rick kept giving them shout outs) who all had these shirts that said "sunday funday" on them. And let me tell you, I have NEVER been more jealous and wishing my fellow mean girls were with me. After singing a little karoke, it was about 2 am and I was ready to head home when my FAVORITE song came on "September" and I knew my night was complete. Missed you all! What is everyones schedule this upcoming week? Who is planning on going to Mardi Gras?

The other night some of us discussed how we could create a calendar for everyone to post their schedules...gmail has a calendar feature, so instead of everyone getting their own gmail account, what about setting up a mean girl account, give everyone the password then we can put our schedules on one calendar??? I'm also thinking we need to organize a trip to the lakes this summer too! ...These are the lovely things I think about instead of studying for boards! =)

Also..... I had my first patient actually die on me last night. It sucked!! He had GI bleeding that wasn't operable and he was draining at least a Liter of blood from his stomach every 10 mins. We gave him 27 units of blood, 20 FFP, 6 plasma, cryo and a bunch of other crap and it wouldn't stop!!!! So the fam decided to let him go. And that was just by 1 am. So needless to say I went out after work in the am to have a couple beers!!

Some Gossip...

Hey girls!! Hope everyone is doing well. It's been a while since I have made a post. So, today I heard from some Goldfarb current students that Seckman doesn't teach anymore!!! Apparently she only is only allowed to teach one class and it's either Masters students or an upper-division assessment class. They actually did something.. CRAZY! Unfortunately, it was after we left.. but still I was shocked.

Also, I heard from Amy Burky she also was on the floor getting her patient info. She informed me that Smokey works in the NICU at St. John's. YUCK!!! Note to self: never to have a baby there. Just think of her dirty, smelliness picking up your sick baby.. eww. Who hired her? and what was she on? Poor Sarah Segrave is gonna have a rough time working with her..

On another note: All the Goldfarb students on the floor today were pretty obnoxious, "know-it alls", loud and lazy asses.. I hope I was never like that! and it also made me kinda embarrassed. How awful is that, I know I was in there shoes 6 months ago.. but I was never like that. You can't be a know it all with cardiac kids.. first off you don't learn much of it in school and second of all you can't do jackshit with the kid. So stop being an f-ing know it all.

On a good note: I am sooo excited for Friday!!!! I hear the pizza is amazing there. Can't wait to see everyone and CONGRATS STEPH for passing boards!!!! :)

I survived...

my first code today. My patient however did not.

It was pretty crazy. She came in from another hospital and had no pulse so we started CPR immediately. We got her back but her pressure and pulse starting dropping again almost immediately and they did CPR two more times. Her son was in the room during the majority of the code. It was sad. While I did not contribute much to the saving of her life I did document the shit out of the code flow sheet. Word.

Oh yeah

I also called Dan Fuller tonight just to see if he was drunk... but unfortunately no answer. I will try again tomorrow.

My Ghetto Fabulous Girl...

So I had a patients daughter ask me today if staying away from microwaves would help prevent the cancer from returning. Of course I just stared at her in disbelief first questioning if this ghetto fabulous girl was really being serious... and when I realized she was completely serious I just shook my head and said yes staying away from microwaves might save his life. (Do we really have people this fucking stupid in the world?) And then she proceeded to ask me what she could get for free. God bless our clientele at Barnes for keeping me entertained!

When I proudly graduated from Goldfarb Academy I barely knew Dan Fuller, all I knew was he stole Sarah's coffee cup and was a pretty big loser. Now I read about him sexually assualting my friends right around daily, I love it.
In other news I am saving kids lives day in and day out. Today there were nursing student's on my floor, sitting there doing nothing, and it brought me back to the good old days.

Next weekend

So...is anyone else celebrating next weekend with the Kaplan course besides me??? Just wondering if I would have someone who can make fun of people who take the questions way to seriously with me. Krista I do believe that you probably have the best stories out of all of us....and I still didnt hear the full Fuller story about why he got your fist in his face.

For the girls taking Kaplan class...

The good news is: it's actually VERY helpful and def not as boring as I expected. It's not a lecture rather you go through questions and the instructor talks through the rationale; tells you stragedy tips and shows you how to actually read the questions in a different way in order to get the right answer... It's VERY helpful. I unfortunately will not be with you girls next weekend because I am working my first real shifts this weekend!! ahh :)

The bad news: you encounter annoying people that try to fight for the answer. They don't understand that this is NCLEX.. there is no arguing what you think is "correct". Whatever. By the end of the afternoon you are ready to be done.. but for the most part it goes by quickly. The first day you do take a 180 question test so be prepared.. it sux but I know honestly if I was made to do the diagnostic I would not have done it. and it will be interesting to see how much we improve.

Also.. 97% of people that do all the Kaplan stuff .. pass! so that's good

Well, have a good week girls! I am off Wed and Thurs if anyone wants to study.

I want to be done studying

Well, I work Monday so I am not sure how much fun I can have on Sunday!
I am definetly way over due on seeing all the mean girls... I'm even further in the ghetto than Barnes at good old Glennon, all by myself. Well, I take that back. I do have orientation with Red and Mary. Jealous anyone??
I start my 12 hr days this coming Friday. I think I'm going to LOVE it. It is very different from Barnes, good and bad, but very different. But I love those little babies and can't wait. However my binder for NICU training is about 3 times as big as the NCLEX review book I should be looking at right now.
How is work for everyone??? I will see whoever is doing Kaplan next weekend!

Sunday Funday Anyone?

I will be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's bday on Monday by having a Sunday Funday this Sunday if anyone wants to join. It will most likely consist of drinking at some south city dive. Good times!

My Updates...

The first patient I observed yesterday lost a rhythm, coded and died. My patient today passed out after his transplant and puked on me. I guess that was my welcome to oncology and bmt!

Fuller called to apologize to me today and asked me out for a make-up beer...WTF!

Both boys I've been out with on dates have been weirdos. Met a girl and she is super cute. Sorry Audra I don't think I'm coming back to your side quite yet or possibly ever actually.

Hey girls! I had so much fun at Happy Hour last night!! We should do it on a regular basis. As most of you saw, I literally fell out of Nick's Pub as I tripped on the step to go outside... Oops! Needless to say I think I was enjoying the Ciders too much :) I came home took a shower with great intentions of going out again... I made the mistake of laying down "only for a sec" after my shower and passed out. So, I'm sorry I did not make it out to Malley's. Hope you girls had fun and it was GREAT seeing you guys again.. I missed my mean girls! Can't wait to go out again soon.

Kelly-That is so awesome you are going to be in the Neuro ICU. My only advice is never trust your patients for a second...they are all crazy. For real, they dont know what the hell they are doing. I miss you all...I need UPDATES! Anything new and exciting in St. Louis?

My updates: I finally decided that it was time for me to buckle down and commit to a job..ugghh..so I will be starting in the Neuro ICU at a hospital in DC Feb. 2.........eeek! Thank GOODNESS my fellowship is 6 months long though. Any advice/pointers Kasey????
